Project Cipher Break

BR-2026-7303 · Tesseract Interactive · The Voxel Lattice · Issued September 3, 2026
The Scene

The player has just activated an ancient terminal deep in a blocky, geometric underground. The camera cuts away from player control. Voxel walls shift and reconfigure as the terminal projects holographic glyphs revealing the world's origin. The lighting shifts from warm amber to cold synthetic blue. This is the moment the player realizes the entire world is a constructed simulation.

The Music

This cutscene needs music that feels like a system waking up, not a battle starting. Think cold, processed, industrial electronic with an unsettling pulse underneath. The track has to build dread and curiosity simultaneously without leaning on obvious horror tropes. The player will see this cutscene once, but the music's identity needs to stick because it will reappear in fragmented form later in the game. The loop must feel intentional, like the system cycling back on itself, not like we ran out of ideas and hit copy-paste.

Direction
  • Heavy distortion and bit-crushed textures as foundational layer, gritty and degraded like corrupted data.
  • Synth bass doing most of the melodic work, a descending or chromatic figure that repeats but evolves slightly each cycle.
  • Sparse, industrial percussion: metallic hits, processed transients, no traditional drum kit.
  • Avoid any organic warmth or orchestral elements. This world is made of math and voxels, the music should feel synthetic and unforgiving.
  • The loop point should land on a rhythmic downbeat so the cycle feels locked in, mechanical, inevitable.

Mick Gordon, Rust, Dust & Guts
Use: The heavily distorted, degraded low-end textures and industrial grit. The way the production feels deliberately damaged and aggressive without relying on traditional metal instrumentation.
Skip: The relentless forward momentum and unbroken intensity. We need more dynamic breathing room and a colder, less human register.
Iron Reich & Akira Yamaoka, You're Not Here
Use: The unsettling, cold atmosphere and the way metal production techniques can create dread without sounding like a battle. The processed, synthetic edge underneath the heaviness.
Skip: Any melodic hooks or emotional warmth. This needs to feel more like system architecture than human expression.
